OK, so here's the deal. S2P is getting ready to release our now semiannual mix CD. In case you didn't know, me and my friends call ourselves "S2P" (it stands for "South Street Posse") because, well, it's easier than listing all our names. So I have to pick 2 or 3 songs that represent my personal favorites for this semester. Yes, I know what you're thinking, "Jared, just pick three random Bjork songs and get it over with!" But it's definitely not that easy.
For one, Bjork songs are weird. Very weird. I wouldn't want to punish my friends or myself by including a track so weird that it became a "skip." Last year, I chose my personal favorite Bjork song, the climactic dance number "Hyper-Ballad," which my friends seemed to tolerate. But this year, things are more problematic. For one, I don't want to submitt ALL Bjork songs, I at least need to include something from my favorite band, Garbage, or my favorite pop group, TLC. But my first problem is picking a Bjork song. Should I pick Bjork's very first hit with the SugarCubes, the listener-friendly "Birthday," because of its amazing vocal acrobatics? Should I pick the epic "Pagan Poetry," the optimistic "Unison," or the simple and passionate "Generous Palmstroke?" Right now, I'm leaning towards "Birthday" - but will I happy with the choice when the CD comes out? Furthermore, what about TLC? I'm considering submitting the self-conscious, emotionally fucked-up theme "Damaged." It sounds depressing, but its an amazingly optimistic acoustic ballad. And Garbage? The current songs in the running are "Drive You Home," "So Like a Rose," and "Parade," with the last of the three most likely making the cut. "Parade" is an interesting song. At the concert at Avalon, Shirley Manson described it as a "fuck it all" song. It is saturated with optimism and hope that is completely uncharacteristic of the normally gloomy Garbage. Here's some lyrics from it: As far as I can tell It doesn't matter who you are If you can believe there's something worth fighting for The color of an eye The glory of a sudden view The baby in your arms The smile she always shoots at you FYI: Garbage integrates aspects of "Get Ur Freak On" into "Parade" when they perform it live. They say Missy is one of their biggest influences, isnt that weird? So, those are the songs in the running for the semester CD. IM me your suggestions or post them. I'll let you know the final product in a later entry. Later. Current Mood: Hm...what is my current mood? Current Music: 3D - TLC
